All season long on Selling Sunset, Chrishell Stause has been sticking up for herself and the reunion episode was no exception.
During multiple segments in the hot seat, the actress and realtor responded to several questions about her conflicts with co-stars Nicole Young and Marie-Lou Nurk, both of which involved Stause’s marriage to the nonbinary Australian musician G Flip in subtle (and sometimes not-so-subtle) ways.
In the first case, Young had responded favorably to an Instagram commenter who referred to Stause as “the lesbian chick.”
“I was hoping the lesbian chick was off in Australia this season and not on our screens. Whatever her name is, I forgot. Nicole you look great!” the commenter wrote, to which Young replied, “Thank you!! ❤️”
Pressed on the matter by reunion host Tan France, Young in turn pushed the limits of credulity, claiming that she didn’t realize it was “homophobic” to refer to someone as “a gay man” or a “lesbian woman,” despite the obvious tone of the comment. (And this was after Chelsea Lazkani masterfully explained, “When somebody identifies Chrishell through her sexuality in a derogatory way and then you comment back to it, you’re basically cosigning that message.”)
The back-and-forth over the comment sparked a heated argument, culminating in a (frankly awe-inspiring) moment of righteous queer anger from Chrishell Stause: “First of all, say whatever you want about me, I’m a tough bitch,” she began. ”But don’t go after my partner. Ever. Listen, I will own it. I’ve been a bitch to you. I hate you. I own it … If you’re gonna literally go to homophobic people and cheer them on because they hate me for that reason, that is hate, Nicole.”
Ultimately, that conversation got derailed into a meditation on what the word “hate” means, but it wasn’t long before Stause got put in the spotlight again — this time over the infamous lunch during which Marie-Lou Nurk misgendered G Flip. Nurk, who at the time was dating Stause’s former boyfriend and current boss Jason Oppenheim, claimed at the much-discussed meal that Stause was unkind to her, and implied that there were unresolved feelings between the exes.
“I was hoping when you did hang out with me and my partner, you would see I am completely head-over-heels in love. I couldn’t possibly be more in love with my partner, and it’s very hard not to see if you’ve spent five minutes with us,” Stause clarified at the reunion.
