J.D Vance Biography

J. D Vance is an American venture capitalist and author best known for his memoir Hillbilly Elegy. J.D. is also the junior USA senator after assuming office in January of 2023. 

During the 2017 Dayton Literary Peace Prize, it was a finalist. The book also attracted attention from both the media and the public during the 2016 election.

His book has also received critical acclaim as it provoked criticism from the Appalachians who argued that Vance was not an authentic hillbilly or representative of the working class.

Critics further argued that in his book Vance as the author misleadingly conflates the experience and identity of his hillbilly grandparents, with whom he spent some summers as a boy, with his own.

In the early months of 2018, Vance contemplated the possibility of a U.S. Senate run against Sherrod Brown, although he eventually opted against it. However, come April 2021, he publicly expressed his eagerness to vie for the Senate seat that would soon be vacated by the Republican incumbent, Rob Portman.

A pivotal moment in his campaign was the generous backing received from notable figures. One standout supporter was Peter Thiel, who committed a substantial $10 million to Protect Ohio Values, a super PAC formed in February 2021 with the primary aim of bolstering Vance’s candidacy in the 2022 U.S. Senate election in Ohio.

Additionally, Robert Mercer, another influential figure, made an undisclosed financial contribution to further support Vance’s campaign. It was in May 2021 that Vance embarked on this ambitious journey, forming an exploratory committee to assess the feasibility of his political aspirations. His official campaign launch took place in July 2021, marking his inaugural venture into public office.

The defining moment arrived on May 3, 2022, when Vance clinched a resounding victory in the Republican primary, amassing 32% of the vote. In a competitive field that included prominent candidates such as Josh Mandel (23%) and Matt Dolan (22%), Vance’s triumph solidified his standing as the Republican contender.

Subsequently, in the general election on November 8, 2022, Vance achieved another significant victory. He secured 53.1% of the vote, surpassing the Democratic nominee, Tim Ryan, who garnered 46.9%. This resounding win affirmed Vance’s place as Ohio’s choice for their senatorial representation.

The culmination of his journey occurred on January 3, 2023, when Vance was officially sworn in as a U.S. Senator. Notably, his ascent to this position was distinguished by the fact that he became Ohio’s first senator to assume office without prior government experience since the illustrious John Glenn, who undertook a similar path in 1974.

He later graduated with a degree in political science and philosophy. Vance also holds a Juris Doctor degree from Yale Law School. He got his idea of writing his memoir while he was in the first year of law school this idea came from one of his professors.

Vance is a married man, he married his former law school classmate Usha Chilukuri. Usha is an Indian-American who was a law clerk to Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts during the 2017–18 term. Between 2014 and 2015 she clerked for then-Judge Brett Kavanaugh.

The couple has two sons, including Ewan. Vance converted to Catholicism in Cincinnati, Ohio, in a Baptism ceremony attended by various conservatives, such as Rob Dreher. Vance said that he had converted because he had been persuaded over time that Catholicism was true and said that the catholic doctrine had influenced his political views.
