- In 1994, he became embroiled in controversy when he allegedly assaulted Kanan Divecha, assistant editor of the film magazine Star & Style. He did this because the magazine published an article about his ex-wife Amrita Singh’s relationship with an actor. On the orders of the High Court, Saif and Amrita settled the matter outside the court and apologized for it in 1999.
- In 1995, the magazine Bombay Dost criticized Main Khiladi Tu Anari as a gay film. Also, when gay rights activist Ashok Row Kavi made fun of Saif’s mother Sharmila Tagore, he became enraged and thrashed Ashok inside their house in Santacruz, Mumbai.
- In 1998, he, along with co-stars Salman Khan, Tabu, Sonali Bendre and Neelam Kothari, was charged under the Wildlife Act and the Indian Penal Code for poaching two black bucks in Kankani, Rajasthan. This happened during the shooting of the film “Hum Saath Saath Hain”. Later, when Saif filed a review petition before a sessions court, he was acquitted of sections 51 of the Wildlife Act (causing harm to wildlife), 147 (punishment for rioting) and 149 (unlawful assembly of persons) of the Indian Penal Code. Later, Saif was again charged under section 149 as the Rajasthan state government filed a revision petition before the Rajasthan High Court. He was summoned by the Jodhpur Court in February 2013, along with all the accused for the commencement of the trial with the revised charges. On 5 April 2018, Saif along with “Hum Saath Saath Hain” co-stars, Tabu, Neelam Kothari and Sonali Bendre were convicted by the Jodhpur court in the 1998 blackbuck murder case. At the same time, after the decision of Magistrate Dev Kumar Khatri, Salman Khan was sentenced to 5 years.
- In 2008, during the shooting of “Love Aaj Kal”, he allegedly hit Pawan Sharma, a photographer, at the Patiala railway station.
- He became a part of the controversy after attacking an Indian businessman from South Africa at the Taj Hotel in Colaba, Mumbai.

- When a Mumbai court accused Saif of assaulting an Indian businessman from South Africa at the Taj Hotel in Mumbai, RTI activist SC Aggarwal filed an objection with the Union Home Ministry. He said that Saif should not be allowed to keep the Padma Shri award given by the then President Pratibha Patil for his contribution as an artist.
