Tragically, on the 31st of August 2023, a Thursday like any other, we bid farewell to this exceptional soul.
Win Palmer’s impact stretched far beyond the basketball court; he was a mentor, a guiding light, and a source of inspiration for generations. Who is Win Palmer? Win Palmer’s Career
It is with a heavy heart that we bid farewell to Win Palmer, an iconic figure in the world of high-school athletics, education, and family. On August 31, 2023, at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA, Win passed away due to complications stemming from cardiovascular issues.
Born to Don and Betty Palmer in Athens, Greece, Win’s journey began in a remarkable way. His upbringing in Chevy Chase, MD, was filled with love, competition, and a strong passion for sports, all of which shaped his future. Recognized as the family’s athletic prodigy, Win, fondly known as “The Natural,” was destined for greatness from the start.
While Win had the opportunity to pursue small-college basketball, he made a pivotal decision to enroll at Notre Dame, where he earned a B.S. in Business in 1980. This choice paved the way for a remarkable career that spanned decades. Win’s journey in the world of sports started as the Head Manager of the Fighting Irish basketball team under the renowned coach Digger Phelps. This experience led him to become an Assistant Basketball Coach at St. Stephens, Virginia, right after college. The following year, he assumed the role of Head Coach, a role that marked the beginning of a long and illustrious career. Over the years, he imparted his coaching wisdom and expertise at St. Stephens for 9 years, Flint Hill in Virginia for 11 years, and, most recently, Sewickley Academy in Pennsylvania for 23 years.
Win Palmer’s legacy as a coach was defined by his ability to inspire countless student-athletes. Under his guidance, his basketball teams achieved a remarkable total of 674 victories, securing four state championships in Virginia and two in Pennsylvania. His dedication and leadership earned him the title of Basketball Coach of the Year by The Washington Post on two occasions, as well as two Pennsylvania Coach of the Year awards. Win’s influence extended beyond basketball, as he was also a respected coach in boys’ golf and girls’ softball and basketball.
The Pittsburgh Basketball Club made the sad announcement that Win Palmer, who served as the school’s athletic director, had passed away. The 31st of August 2023, a Thursday, was the day he passed away.
As the athletic director, Win’s impact was profound. He mentored thousands of students and coaches, instilling in them values of excellence, integrity, teamwork, and sportsmanship. These were the very qualities that defined his own character and served as a testament to his unwavering commitment.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Win was a devoted husband and father. Coaching his sons in high-school basketball was a source of immense joy for him. Off the court, he found pleasure in rooting for the Red Sox, enjoying rounds of golf, and savoring a delicious slice of pizza.
Left to cherish his memory are his sons, Matthew Palmer (Nina Palmer) of Philadelphia, PA, and Tyler Palmer (Melissa Palmer) of Charlotte, NC. Win is also survived by his siblings, Julie Palmer of Brookline, MA, and Jeff Palmer (Mimi Zolan) of Bloomington, IN. His legacy lives on through his nieces, nephews, in-laws, cousins, and countless friends. He is predeceased by his beloved wife of 35 years, Dawn Nicholson Palmer, and his sister, Beth Palmer.
Win’s life was a testament to both his athletic achievements and his personal character. Accumulating over 700 wins in his basketball career, he demonstrated excellence both on and off the court. As a coach and athletic director, Win Palmer set the gold standard for others to follow.
WIN’s influence extended beyond statistics, as he touched numerous lives through his extensive knowledge and unwavering passion for sports. His coaching approach was a perfect blend of guidance and motivation, empowering his players to unlock their full potential.
